CLAIM: Cleaning Litter by developing and Applying Innovative Methods in european seas
The newly funded EU Horizon 2020 project CLAIM organised the kick-off meeting in Heraklion (Greece) on 14-16th November 2017.
This Project addresses a major environmental problem, the presence and accumulation of plastic debris in the marine environment, which has been increasing substantially in the last fifty years.
CLAIM project targets pollution in marine areas by focusing on the development of innovative cleaning technologies and approaches. The project will design new strategies for prevention and in situ management visible and invisible marine litter with a focus on several scenarios in the Mediterranean and Baltic Sea. Real environment will be tested in-situ in key areas across the Mediterranean (Lyon Gulf, Ligurian Sea, Saronikos Gulf) and the Baltic Sea (near Denmark). In addition, the project will seek out new business models to enhance the economic feasibility for upscaling CLAIM innovations.
CLAIM is funded under Horizon 2020 Call BG-07-2017: Blue green innovation for clean coasts and seas. The project has a duration of four years and brings together 19 institutions, five of which are small or medium enterprises (SMEs), from across Europe. The official project kick-off will take place in November 2017 in Heraklion (Greece).
